  • Camera with film or Digital Camera
    Computer with a Printer
    White Card Stock
Black Card Stock or Construction Paper
    Black Paint (Washable)

First, Take a side-view picture of a child from the neck up. Next have the film developed on a CD and upload it to your computer or if taken with a digital camera upload it to your computer.

Blow the picture up to an 8x10 (the picture will be distorted but it doesn't matter for this project.) Print the 8x10 picture onto the White Card stock. Cut the picture out going around the face, hair, eyes, etc. If done correctly you can see the silhouette when you turn the picture over.

Next have the child paint one side or the other solid with Black Paint (washable is best for small children). Let dry flat (it may curl around the edges, if this happens simply place it under heavy books for a few hours after it is dry). Mount the Black Silhouette into the center of another sheet of White Card stock and mount the whole thing to a sheet of Black Construction Paper or Card stock. You are trying to create a mat for the picture.

Make sure you record the name and age and date somewhere on the paper (front or back). This is a great gift for parents or for a scrapbook and really looks like the old Silhouette pictures. This project can be made in any size, not just 8x10.
