Juanita Doll – Vintage Crochet Pattern

A kitschy vintage crochet pattern to make a Juanita doll.

What you need

J. & P. COATS “KNIT-CRO-SHEEN,” Art. A.64:
2 balls of No. 126 Spanish Red; a few yards of Black; and J. & P. COATS TATTING-CROCHET, Art. A.2I, Size 70: 4 balls of No. 12 Black.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hooks No. 7 and No. 14. A hairpin lace staple, 58 inch wide
Black sequins
A doll 11 inches tall; waist 5 1/2 inches.

Instructions

DRESS-Skirt . . . Starting at top with Spanish Red and No. 7 hook, ch 42 to reach loosely around doll’s waist.

1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 5, skip 3 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across. Turn.

2nd row: In each loop across make sc, 9 dc and sc. Ch 4, turn.

3rd row: Skip first sc and dc, picking up front loop only, * (dc in next dc, ch 1) 7 times; holding back on hook the last loop of each dc make dc in next dc and in first dc of next scallop, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (joint-dc made), ch1. Repeat from * across. Turn. Hereafter pick up back loop only.

4th row: Sl st in next ch and in next dc, ch 3, * tr in each ch and in each dc across scallop to within last dc, make a joint-dc over next dc and first dc of next scallop. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in last dc. Join to top of ch-3.

Now work in rnds as follows:

1st rnd: Sl st in next tr, ch 4, * (tr in next tr, ch 1) 9 times; make a joint-dc over next tr and first tr of next scallop, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join.

2nd rnd: Sl st in next ch and in next tr, ch 3, * tr in each ch and in each tr across scallop to within last tr, make a joint-dc over next tr and first tr of next scallop. Repeat from * around. Join.

3rd rnd: Sl st in next tr, ch 4, * (tr in next tr, ch 1) 13 times; make a joint-dc over next tr and first tr of next scallop, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join.

4th rnd: Sl st in next tr, ch 3, * tr in each tr and in each ch across to within last tr, make a joint-dc over next 2 tr. Repeat from * around.

5th rnd: Sl st in next tr, ch 4, * tr in next tr, (ch 1, skip 1 tr, tr in next tr) 3 times; (ch 1, tr in next tr) 4 times; (ch 1, skip 1 tr, tr in next tr) 4 times; ch 1, make a joint-dc over next 2 tr. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd ch of ch-4.

6th to 9th rnds inch Repeat 4th and 5th rnds alternately 2 more times.

10th rnd: Repeat 4th rnd once more. Join and break off.

BODICE … 1st row: Attach thread to opposite side of chain on Skirt, ch 4, * 3 dc in next sp, ch 1. Repeat from * across, dc in last sc. Ch 3, turn.

2nd row: Skip first dc, dc in each dc and in each sp across, dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.

3rd row: Skip first dc, dc in next 2 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc. Repeat from * across, ending with dc in top of turning chain. Ch 3, turn.

4th row: Skip first dc, dc in next 10 dc, ch 5, skip 3 dc, dc in each dc across to within last 13 dc and turning chain, ch 5, skip 3 dc, dc in each remaining dc and in top of turning chain. Ch 1, turn.

5th row: Sc in each dc and in each ch across. Break off. TRIM . . .

With Black Tatting-Crochet and No. 14 hook, make a strip of hairpin lace about 40 inches long.

HEADING . . . Keeping the twist in all loops, attach thread to first loop on hairpin lace, sc in same place, sc in each loop across. Break off.

SCALLOPED EDGE . . . String sequins on thread, attach thread to first loop on other side of hairpin lace, draw 1 sequin over loop, sc in same place, * (ch 3, sc in next loop) twice; ch 3, draw 1 sequin in place, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across. Break off. Sew in place over 5th and 6th rnds of Skirt, forming scallops as in illustration.

Make 2 more pieces the same way and sew to Skirt, spacing evenly. Make another piece about 7 inches long and sew around neck of dress. Make a small bow with black, grosgrain ribbon and sew to front of dress. Make a piece of hairpin lace as before about l l/2 inches, gather straight edge to form a fan. Sew a piece of wire to center to hold . in shape. Sew to right hand.

Make another piece of hairpin lace, draw doll’s hair to top of head. Sew hairpin lace around head. Sew a flower to front. Sew another flower to left wrist.

SLIPPER (Make 2) … Starting at center of bottom with Black “Knit- Cro-Sheen,” ch 14. 1st rnd: 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across, 5 dc in last ch (toe); working along opposite side of starting chain make dc in each ch across. Join.

2nd rnd: Sc in each dc around.

3rd and 4th rnds: Sc in each sc around to within center 3 sc at toe, work off 3 sc as 1 sc, sc in each remaining sc around.

5th rnd: Sc in each sc around. Join and break off.

PETTICOAT . . . Cut a strip of 6-inch crinoline hemline binding 18 inches long. Gather across one long side to fit around doll’s waist. Sew back seam, leaving a 1-inch opening at top. Sew bias binding around top. Sew a hook and eye at back. Turn up hem to correspond with length of skirt.

PANTIES . . . Starting at waist make a chain long enough to reach around widest part of doll. Join, being careful not to twist.

1st to 4th rnds incl: Ch 3, dc in each st around. Join. For 11-inch dolls work 9 rnds (instead of 4 rnds). Ch 4 for crotch and sl st directly opposite. Break off. Draw cord through sts of 1st rnd.

All done!
