You can make organic lotions right in your kitchen.  They don't cost a lot of money and naturally they have no harmful ingredients.  In fact, you can use them as a face, hand and body lotion since you won't be shelling out big bucks for commercial brands.  Once you have created your first batch, you'll need to increase the size of the recipe so you can give away bottles or jars of your handmade lotion as gifts.  When the word gets around, you'll be able to sell your product!
  Why Make Organic Products?
If you want the recipe right now, just scroll down.  Otherwise, please read about WHY you should be making your own moisturizers.  Lotions/moisturizers/creams and any other cosmetic substance you apply onto your skin will find its way into your body.  After all, your skin is an organ the same as your liver, lungs or heart.  It just covers a larger area!  Read labels on whatever you purchase and you'll see a lot of words that are hard to read and pronounce.  Words like triethanolamine and stearalkonium chloride are merely two examples.  These are preservatives that allow the commercial product to remain on the shelf for months or even years at a time.  You can go to your nearest 99¢ Only store and buy an 8 ounce bottle of lotion, thinking you're getting a bargain.  But the label will be full of words that translate as one thing:  synthetic.  The most common synthetic used are the Parabens.  Methyl Paraben, Propyl Paraben, Butyl Paraben and Ethyl Paraben.  Sounds like a nuclear family!  All the Parabens are nasty as they can cause allergic reactions and rashes.

Avoiding skin care products with the word petrolatum or petroleum will be an excellent idea.  Nothing more than mineral oil jellies, petroleum products used to cure dry skins actually do only one thing—dry your skin even more.  Better things can be done with your money.

Propylene Glycol is supposed to be a vegetable glycerin.  Sometimes it's combined with grain alcohol.  Neither one of these products is harmful to you or your skin—even if you don't drink any kind of liquor!  However, synthetic glycerin is known to cause toxic reactions.

There you have it, some reasons to stay as organic as possible!
Equipment Needed:

To make homemade lotion, you don't need a lot of fancy or expensive equipment.  You will need the following:
Blender

Double boiler

Glass measuring cup

Measuring spoons

Wooden spoon

Jars and/or bottles, plastic or glass

Ingredients:

2/3 cup [150 ml] grapeseed oil

1/3 cup [75 ml] coconut oil

1 teaspoon [5 ml] cocoa butter

1 Tablespoon [15 ml] beeswax [natural colored]

1/3 cup [75 ml] floral water [rose, orange, lavender, etc.]

1/3 cup [75 ml] distilled or spring water

1/3 cup [75 ml] organic aloe vera gel

20 drops vitamin E oil

10 drops of your favorite essential oil

Plastic bottle or cobalt/amber glass bottles

Small jars can be used if you're making sample sizes

Makes 15 ounces

7 Simple Steps:

  1. In the double boiler add the grapeseed and coconut oils, cocoa butter and beeswax.
  2. The beeswax will probably be the last item to melt.  Once it's done, pour the contents into a glass measuring cup.
  3. Allow the mixture to remain in the measuring cup until it reaches room temperature.  This generally takes 1 hour.
  4. Add the distilled water, floral water, aloe vera gel, vitamin E and essential oil in the blender.  Turn the blender on to the highest speed for at least two minutes.
  5. Slowly pour the cooled oils into the center of the swirling waters.  The blender is still on.
  6. When the blender makes a coughing noise this is the signal to turn it off.  The lotion is mixed thoroughly. Pour into the container[s].

There it is, your first batch of homemade, organic lotion!  You should always keep this product stored at room temperature.  If the temperature drops below 60 degrees the coconut oil will congeal and you'll have a very hard lotion.  Should it harden, you can put it into the microwave [providing the container is microwavable] for about 10 seconds.

Where to Buy the Ingredients:

Many of the products can be found in your local health food store.  However, the beeswax can be bought at a candle/craft supply store.  Make certain you get the yellow or white beeswax.
