Two new articles based on Jakarta Commons Book

TheServerside.com and developer.com have published articles based on my book Jakarta Commons Online Bookshelf.

Serverside has published an excerpt based on the NET component from Module 3 of the bookshelf.

Developer.com has a Betwixt excerpt based on Module 5 which also covers JXPath.

Update:

It just hit me that theserverside.com had actually published another excerpt taken from Module 6 on Validator.

Jittery presentation

I gave a presentation on Mobile Java to the Australian Computer Society Special Interest Group on Wednesday (13/July). It was a presentation that I wanted to give because of two reasons:

1. I wanted to overcome my recently gathered fear of public speaking. I used to be a semi active speaker in school and college and in recent times had lost the nerve.

2. I wanted to establish myself as a consultant in the Mobile Java field. It is a growing market and eventually, I want to start my own Mobile Java services company and thought that by giving a presentation, I would force myself to read and become proficient on the subject.

So, on count 1, I was semi-successful. I was jittery and very visibly nervous at the start. I slurred words and spoke too rapidly at times. I know that I improved as it continued, and I am pretty sure that I could do the same again, with marked improvement. In any case, it was a start.

On count 2, I was already partly successful before the start of the presentation, as I had prepared myself thoroughly on the topic. In essence, it was six months in the making, as I had started writing on the topic at java.net, early this year. I was able to handle all the questions at the end with considerable ease. How far this would go in establishing my credentials is yet to be seen.

Anybody looking for a speaker on Mobile Java?

Javaworld publishes Modeler excerpt

Javaworld has published an excerpt from my book Jakarta Commons Online Bookshelf.

The excerpt is from Module 11, which covers Jakarta Commons Modeler.

It is great to see yourself published in Javaworld, even though it is only a chapter excerpt. :)

Blogging on java.net

I have started blogging on java.net from today onwards. As you would expect, this is a work related blog. I will continue to post personal stuff here and java related on java.net. My interests, at the moment atleast, lie in Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME, technology for mobile devices) so if you are interested in such stuff then read my thoughts here.

Interesting thing is that they also use MT for publishing these blogs (as is this one). It's an environment that I am comfortable with although I am surprised that MT was so configurable.

Anyways, hope to see you there!

Jakarta Commons Online Bookshelf/Jakarta Commons in Action - now for sale!

Manning has started selling my book, Jakarta Commons Online Bookshelf (formerly called Jakarta Commons in Action). The book covers several Jakarta Commons projects and explains them from the ground up, which basically means that I cover the technology behind each component before I discuss the components themselves. A very important technique because it tells you not just how to use the component, but why and where to use it as well.

The plan is to eventually update the contents of the book as newer versions of the Commons components are released. But this is not yet official and will depend on the sales.

Here is the link to it. What are you waiting for? Go buy it!
